Watergate's Woodward says 'Times' Trump op-ed not up to his standards

U.S. first lady Melania Trump delivers remarks during a Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention summit at the Health Resources and Service Administrati

On Capitol Hill, a confirmation hearing in a staid Senate office building is repeatedly interrupted by protesters shouting at the nominee and the senators; 70 people are arrested.

The story ran Wednesday and was written by an anonymous individual who claims to be working for the president.

Woodward, whose new book "Fear: Trump in the White House" hits book stores on Tuesday, described the incident in the interview with CBS as the most risky moment of Trump's nuclear standoff with North Korea.

"Whereas right now we're talking about the substance of what's in the op-ed", he said.

Trump is quoted as likening former chief of staff Reince Priebus to "a little rat", and telling his 80-year-old secretary of commerce, Wilbur Ross, "I don't trust you".

Woodward told CBS that Trump's staffers are concerned that the president could make an impulsive decision that could have major global consequences.

At one point, Trump drafted a tweet saying the United States planned to "pull our dependents from South Korea - family members of the 28,000 people there", Woodward told CBS. "Based on those conversations, [I] came away feeling totally confident that this was the official in the Trump administration that they claimed they were". "That person should be found out and stopped", Giuliani said.

He said that unsent tweet was the most risky moment of Trump's standoff with North Korea.

"Quite frankly if there was a person in the White House or in the administration who wanted to tell me what's in the Op-Ed piece I would say 'Okay, name me who was there". Woodward and Carl Bernstein's reporting on Watergate for The Washington Post helped end the Nixon presidency. If it should be determined that this anonymous author had access to classified information while serving the president, he/she must be tried and imprisoned for their crime. "Everyone can agree that if they find out who did it, the author can be fired, but we should be careful about the line between things for which you can be fired and things for which the president can sic the Justice Department on you".

Some of Mr. Trump's inner circle also denied it when asked by reporters, including top adviser Kellyanne Conway and White House Counsel Don McGahn.

"This also has happened in other administrations but not to the extent it has happened here because there has previously been a lot more confidence in the president on the part of his staff".

Such a declaration from the "U.S. commander in chief on Twitter was nearly unthinkable" and Pentagon leadership anxious that such a tweet would provoke North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Woodward wrote. He added that Woodward's tome is a "big, fat ugly book with all the misquotes and all the lies".
