Trump rejects official Puerto Rico hurricane death toll, blames Democrats

FEMA chief Coastal NC residents should leave

President Donald Trump has been "lying about Puerto Rico from the start to make himself look better", and on Thursday morning Trump lied once more by falsely claiming that a widely accepted academic study showing that almost 3,000 Puerto Ricans died as a result of Hurricane Maria was "done by the Democrats" in an attempt to make him "look as bad as possible".

Trump, who famously DVRs news programs for later viewing, must have finally caught up with the controversy caused by comments he made on Tuesday in which he said his response to Hurricane Maria was "tremendous".

Rossello said Puerto Ricans "do not deserve to have their pain questioned" and backed the study. He then went on to accuse Democrats of making up the number so that he would look bad.

President Trump on Thursday claimed the number of people who died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico "did not go up by much" beyond the initial counts that were released just after the storm and put the death toll in the single or low double digits.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora addressed President Donald Trump's comments on Thursday after the President tweeted he doubted the death toll in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria hit previous year. Trump said there were "6 to 18 deaths" shortly after the storm hit Puerto Rico in 2017.

Below is a list of studies that have estimated the death toll there. In August, after a thorough review, Puerto Rican officials accepted a revised estimate of the dead as 2,975.

In a pair of tweets Thursday, Trump appeared to specifically attack the findings of that study.

Trump touted the federal government's response as "an incredible, unsung success" this week.

Trump reserved his vitriol for San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, who had denounced the poor federal response to the hurricane. He is doubling down on his absurd and offensive suggestion that his response to Hurricane Maria a year ago was "incredibly successful". We've seen conflicting information associated with the process of coming up with a realistic accounting of how many people died during and after the storm.

Trump supporter David Urban tried to defend the president, saying that the president should have said that the government did their best and they intend to do better in the future.

At least one other Republican said he agreed with Trump that Democrats were taking advantage of natural disasters for political gain.

A top FEMA official defended the agency after a photo revealed millions of water bottles the agency had positioned on the island sitting on a runway a year after Hurricane Maria knocked out critical supply chains.

Politicizing tragedy isn't something new, but Trump is taking us to darker place with statements like he's made this week, as his focus seemingly remains squarely on himself and his image. "And over at Fox News Puerto Rico never happened", she said".

"To be tweeting about 3,000 people and be efficient, it's actually disrespectful for my country", said Cora, a former player from Caguas, about 20 miles south of San Juan. "We try to reach the truth, and we try to understand what is damaging the people in order to prevent disease", he said.

The president has not provided any evidence for his claim that Democrats inflated the number and has been criticized on both the right and the left for it. And New Orleans was far more accessible than the mountainous island of Puerto Rico.

But Trump, that official said, was unwilling to admit even internally that more needed to be done on the island.
