Trump Mocks Attorney General Sessions for Republican Indictments

Trump went on Twitter on Sunday afternoon to blame Attorney General Jeff Sessions for the timing of the indictments of Reps.

Two of Trump's regular critics in the GOP Senate were quick to argue that Trump was trying to politicize the Justice Department. Sen.

President Donald Trump on Monday blasted his Attorney General Jeff Sessions and lamented the indictments of two lawmakers who were his earliest supporters in Congress during the 2016 election, suggesting they should not have been charged because they are Republicans. "Two easy wins now in doubt", Trump tweeted.

On Aug. 23, Republican Representative Duncan Hunter was indicted on charges that he and his wife used hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds to pay for vacations, video games and other personal expenses and filed false campaign finance reports, federal officials said.

A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (Trump's alma mater), Berman has contributed to numerous Republican candidates including Trump himself.

But he was apparently referring to the first two Republicans to endorse him in the GOP presidential primaries. Calling the agency the "Jeff Sessions Justice Department" is the president's ultimate insult, Trump advisers say. Trump did not have any public events Monday.

The Justice Department also began investigating Hunter previous year, with the House Ethics Committee announcing in March 2017 that it was holding off on taking action against Hunter because the Justice Department had launched a criminal investigation into his use of campaign funds.

"The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice - one for the majority party and one for the minority party".

Mr Trump has previously pressed Mr Sessions to investigate his perceived enemies and has accused Mr Sessions of failing to take control of the Justice Department. Trump has also repeatedly complained publicly and privately over Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the federal investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation because he'd worked on Trump's campaign.

Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now.

The comments prompted a pointed response from Sessions, who said in a statement that "While I am Attorney General, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations". Trump would probably argue that he's saying no indictments should be handed down this close to an election, regardless of party.
