Serena Williams got off easy

Williams Keys hoping to make it an American US Open final

Williams's coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, acknowledged that he was trying to give her instructions, but said that she did not see him.

Williams lost after receiving multiple penalties from Chair Umpire Carlos Ramos - including a point penalty for breaking her racket, and then a game penalty for arguing with Ramos and calling him a "thief".

Serena Williams' behavior in Saturday's U.S. Open final divided the tennis world after she called the chair umpire a "liar" and a "thief" and said he treated her differently than male players during her loss to Naomi Osaka.

She demanded Ramos apologise for handing her a coaching violation and later called the umpire a "thief" for giving her a point penalty.

MARGARET COURT, the 24-time Grand Slam victor Serena Williams is aiming to emulate.

The second violation also cost her a point in the match, sparking her renewed verbal attack on Ramos, a code violation which carried a US$10,000 fine. But it was clear the moment took some of the shine off the win as Osaka looked more devastated than delighted when she was presented with the $3.8 million winner's cheque and trophy.

"He alleged that I was cheating, and I wasn't cheating", Williams said.

Williams said she hoped that her taking a stand would enable women to be freer in the future. I know you were here rooting, I was rooting too. "I don't cheat to win, I'd rather lose", she tells umpire Carlos Ramos (right). It isn't and, as a result, a player was penalized for the actions of her coach. "Maybe it didn't work out for me, but it's going to work out for the next person".

"I'm here to fight for women's rights and women's equality", she said later. While she has won six of her 23 grand-slam titles at Flushing Meadows and regards Ashe as the stadium in...

She later accused him of sexism, saying: "He's never taken a game from a man because they said "thief".

Osaka's sister Mari is also a tennis player and they were coached by their father after he made a decision to try to copy Richard Williams' remarkable success with his daughters.

During a press conference, Williams criticized the calls from Ramos as sexist.

Through it all, a laser-focused Osaka said she did not even notice the outbursts as she kept her eyes on the ultimate prize with a sense of cool that was well beyond her years, especially considering the stage she was on.

Williams whispered something to Osaka and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "I thought I did a really good job throughout all the matches, kind of putting that aside and just going out there and playing tennis". I feel so sorry for Naomi Osaka. "There's a lot of men out here that have said a lot of things and because they are men [the same punishment] does not happen to them". It was just so sad for me to see at the presentation that she was in tears.

"I've said far worse", McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam singles victor, said on ESPN.

In the rule book, verbal abuse is defined as "a statement about an official, opponent, sponsor, spectator, or other person that implies dishonesty or is derogatory, insulting or otherwise abusive". Mouratoglou also offered a few valid points.

"One thing I love about tennis is being out there". "Second, we all know that all the coaches coach at every match, all year long, from the first of January all the way to the 31st of December. It's the most cliched things you could think of, always things that make you go "Ugh".
