Rahul Gandhi demands Arun Jaitley’s resignation over Vijay Mallya allegations

Met finance minister before leaving the country Vijay Mallya

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley rejected Vijay Mallya's claim that he had met the absconding bank fraud accused before he fled the nation in March 2016.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra on Thursday launched another scattering attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi and refused all the allegations claimed by businessman Vijay Mallya against the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Why didn't the Modi government, also the owner of banks whom he allegedly defrauded, take precautionary action to make sure Mallya doesn't cross the border?

A United Kingdom court on Wednesday fixed December 10 as the date to deliver its verdict on whether beleaguered liquor baron Vijay Mallya can be extradited to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crores. "People want to know (sic)", Kejriwal said. Mallya said he met Jaitley and told him to facilitate a settlement deal with banks and, more importantly, also told the finance minister that he was leaving for London. Before leaving I met the finance minister and offered to settle (the issue with the banks), Mallya said, without naming the minister.

Jaitley said Mallya "misused" the privilege of being a Rajya Sabha MP to catch him in corridors of Parliament.

One can forget about Mallya's talk with Jaitley about the settlement part, this was anyway not acceptable for banks since Mallya was offering much less than what the banks claimed he owed them. However, he left to United Kingdom without paying bank debts and Government of India's plans of extradition didn't work out yet.

Back home, the Congress pounced upon Mallya's comment and demanded that the government explain how the embattled industrialist was allowed to leave India and demanded a thorough inquiry. But, it was nearly a week by then since Mallya left the country.

Terming Mallya's offer to settle overdue loans of more than Rs 9,000 crore to his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines as "bluff offers", Jaitley said he did not even take the papers the liquor baron was carrying during that brief encounter. The judge has set December 10 as the next date, which is when a verdict is expected.

Reportedly, the video submitted by the Indian authorities shows Barrack 12 of Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai where Vijay Mallya will be housed if he is extradited.

Jaitley probably owes another clarification on why he gave a major miss to Mallya's clue on the great escape to United Kingdom, the dream safe haven for a number of fraudsters.

"Vijay Mallya left India with the country's money after a farewell from Arun Jaitley. Do we need anymore proof that this govt.is in the pocket of crony capitalists".
