'Politicised circus': Protesters heckle hearing for Trump's Supreme Court pick

Judge Kavanaugh vows to be a ‘neutral and impartial arbiter’

Kamala Harris, D-Calif. Sen. If all goes as Republicans plan, Kavanaugh could be on the bench when the court begins its new term on October 1.

Kavanaugh is 53 years old and could serve on the Supreme Court for decades to come.

"The Supreme Court must never be viewed as a partisan institution", Kavanaugh said in his opening statement Tuesday.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey said they would have had to read 7,000 pages an hour overnight just to review the files shared on Monday evening. Does it matter, though, how contentious the hearings are if Democrats don't have the ability to block a Kavanaugh nomination? After Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stole this Supreme Court seat from Merrick Garland, many among the Democratic base have demanded that their elected leaders put up a fight no matter the odds.

The ever-polarizing Roe v. Wade is among the cases Kavanaugh's vote could turn.

Strong Democratic opposition to Trump's nominee reflects the political stakes for both parties in advance of the November elections, Robert Mueller's investigation of Trump's 2016 campaign and the potentially pivotal role Kavanaugh could play in moving the court to the right.

Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing has been riddled with frequent outbursts from the gallery, leading to multiple ejections and arrests.

"This isn't his first rodeo", said the official, who acknowledged that Kavanaugh has been a judge for 12 years and judges don't often get interrupted or stopped mid-sentence.

If confirmed by the Senate, Kavanaugh would replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, a moderate conservative who was a swing vote on the court.

The "Coyote Ugly" star posted video of herself being escorted out of the hearing room by Capitol Police while the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing was underway.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's nominee to be the ninth justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, says his philosophy is straightforward: a judge must interpret the law, not make the law. Kennedy was also the decisive vote for same-sex marriage and university affirmative action.

The mostly female demonstrators shouted out that Mr Kavanaugh would allow President Trump to pardon himself. The remark was notable because the nine justices on the Supreme Court can act like nine separate law firms.

Noting that Kavanaugh has more than 300 opinions and submitted around 17,000 pages with his committee questionnaire, Grassley is likely to stress that he's released thousands of pages and that he's only asked for non-privileged documents and that Democratic requests for every document would have taken months to complete. She said more than 90 percent of his records are being withheld from the Senate and the public.

Democrats made it clear that three topics in particular - abortion, guns and executive power - will be front and center as they lob questions at Kavanaugh tomorrow.

Trump jumped into the fray late in the day, saying on Twitter that Democrats were "looking to inflict pain and embarrassment" on Kavanaugh.
