Missing After Boats Collide, Sink on Colorado River

A boat collision near Moabi Regional Park on Saturday evening resulted in 13 injuries and two missing people authorities said

One boater is still missing.

The Tulare County Sheriff's Office confirmed Monday that a woman who died when two boats crashed on the Colorado River was Chrisi Lewis, the step-daughter of former Sheriff Bill Wittman.

The body of Californian woman Kirra Drury was the latest to be retrieved from the Colorado River when police divers pulled the 24-year-old out of the water at about 12.35pm on Tuesday (Californian time).

Mortensen says Lewis was a California resident, but her hometown hasn't been determined.

Nine victims, including two in critical condition, were transported to nearby hospitals by ambulance. A spokesperson for the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said that not a single person on board either boat was wearing a life vest.

The sheriff's office said the boats - one moving north carrying 10 people, the other moving south and carrying six people - collided head-on.

The crash occurred between two popular marinas and near Moabi Regional Park, as people enjoyed the Labor Day weekend. Divers have been sent into the river, which can run as deep as 30 feet (9 meters).

Law enforcement responds to a boating crash on the Colorado River.

Two people were critically injured in the crash and flown to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, officials said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Arizona Department of Public Service Air Rescue and Care Flight all deployed helicopters in the search.

One of the vessels sank and the other was heavily damaged. Some of those onboard the boats apparently were thrown into the water by the force of the collision or jumped, and were swept down the river.

On Saturday night, authorities had to temporarily halt the search because it was too risky to put divers into the dark waters. The other boat involved in the collision was also submerged.

The sheriff's office said it would continue to patrol the river "until all the unaccounted for passengers are located".
