Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser Jailed

Donald Trump right stands next to Sen. Jeff Sessions as Sessions speaks during a rally on Feb. 28 2016 in Madison Ala

He is the first former campaign aide to be sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

President Donald Trump on Friday mocked the two-week prison sentence given to former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos who pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contact with Russian operatives before the 2016 election, despite declaring hours earlier: "I don't know him".

Papadopoulos, who was initially interrogated on January 27, 2017 by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents regarding his work for the Trump campaign, was arrested at Washington-Dulles International Airport on July 27, 2017 and arraigned the following day.

Thomas Breen, Papadopoulos's lawyer, admitted that his client had been "naive" and "a fool", but he also cast blame on President Trump.

Those issues are now at the heart of Mueller's sprawling investigation, which increasingly threatens Trump's inner circle and the president himself. The diplomat relayed the information to his government, which passed it along to the USA government. "Decisions", Papadopoulos tweeted late last month, apparently in reference to the possibility that he might rescind his guilty plea.

In a court filing, lawyers for Papadopoulos had argued for probation, saying he was "ashamed and remorseful" but wasn't trying to undermine the Russian Federation probe when he was "caught off-guard by an impromptu interrogation".

DNC lawyers wrote in court filings Friday that Joseph Mifsud, who spoke to Papadopoulos during the 2016 presidential election, "is missing and may be deceased", Bloomberg News reported.

According to Bloomberg, the DNC said it believed all of the defendants in the case had been served, with the exception of Mifsud.

He has testified that senior campaign members encouraged him during 2016 to build ties with Russian Federation, including after he told them that Moscow possessed - and could be willing to share - dirt on Trump's election rival Hillary Clinton.

Prosecutors working for special counsel Robert S Mueller III had asked the judge to sentence Papadopoulos to six months in prison, saying his false statements "were meant to harm the investigation, and did so".

J.D. Gordon, former National Security Adviser for the Trump campaign, echoed similar sentiments, while blasting the Mueller probe. He gave false statements about his contacts to the FBI, which the FBI said impeded their investigation into the extent that Russian meddling may have worked its way into the campaign.

Papadopoulos' attorney asked for probation.

"We were hoping for no jail time but two weeks is OK", Maria Stamatopoulos said.

Papadopoulos was the key to discovering that, the government says.

Papadopoulos brought the idea up at a campaign meeting with Trump and future Attorney General Jeff Sessions, with Sessions later testifying before Congress that he had "pushed back" against the idea.

Van der Zwaan was sentenced to 30 days in a Pennsylvania prison and received a $20,000 fine.
