Del Potro through to final as injured Nadal retires

Nadal Del Potro Cilic US Open

The first signs of trouble with Nadal's knee came after the seventh game of the first set, when the Spaniard called the trainer to have his right knee taped just below the kneecap - the same place he had it taped throughout his third-round match against Karen Khachanov, a four-setter that lasted 4 hours 23 minutes.

Devastated Rafael Nadal vowed the knee injury that forced him out of the US Open semi-final on Friday won't stop him chasing more Grand Slam glory. "It was not a tennis match at the end". And while he still had the devastating forehand that's been one of tennis' signature shots and carried him to the 2009 title, repeated wrist injuries had made him one dimensional on the backhand side. "I said to my box immediately that I felt something on the knee".

Del Potro beat Nadal in the last four at Flushing Meadows nine years ago on his way to the title, but had suffered misery in recent contests with the Spaniard, losing three successive slam meetings starting with a defeat at this stage of the 2017 US Open.

He also retired trailing in the fifth set of his Australian Open quarter-final against Marin Cilic in January.

"It was hard for me to keep playing".

Djokovic has won his past 13 sets in NY. "You could imagine very hard for me to say good-bye before the match finish".

The defending champion meets Del Potro for the second year in a row at the US Open semi-finals and he will draw upon the experience of having won that match and also having defeated the Argentine at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

This one, given the added difficulty created by unusually high heat and humidity, would certainly be meaningful.

It took Nishikori more than a quarter of an hour to get on the board on Friday, but, on a night when injury was the talking point, he pulled up dramatically mid-point in the ninth game, grabbing at his right leg, before holding to keep the set alive at 3-5.

With six years on the 37-year-old Swiss, speculation would no doubt mount as to whether 31-year-old Djokovic - who looks fit, healthy and motivated after a lengthy lay-off with an elbow injury - could even surpass his 20 major haul.

"He's a big match player and I'm sure the final will be a thrilling match".

Those pals helped del Potro get through the toughest times, as he would need to repeatedly return to have surgery.

While an nearly five hour quarter-final victory over Dominic Thiem, it would be fair to state concerns over the winning player in their subsequent match, but the quirks of the US Open schedule mean that the Spaniard will have had nearly 72 hours to recover from these exertions - virtually unheard of recovery time in the latter stages of professional tennis tournaments.

Del Potro sensed blood and broke for 3-1 as Nadal struggled for movement. "I had my biggest memories on the tennis court playing on this court ... but I was a kid".
