Bob Woodward opens up to Dana Perino in exclusive Fox News interview

U.S. President Donald Trump

The president's frustration grew when, soon after portions of Woodward's book were leaked, the New York Times published an anonymous op-ed by a senior Trump official who wrote of a quiet "resistance" inside the Trump administration, working against some of the president's wishes.

Trump has attacked the book and author, calling it "fiction" and Woodward an "idiot".

Woodward staunchly defended his work, saying on NBC's "Today" show that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House chief of staff John Kelly "are not telling the truth" when they deny making disparaging remarks about Trump attributed to them.

Trump has dismissed the Woodward book as a "scam" filled with "made up" quotes.

Asked whether he was shocked by what he uncovered in his book, Woodward said: "I've never seen an instance when the president is so detached from the reality of what's going on". He also called Woodward a "liar" and a "Dem operative".

Legendary journalist says a presidency is measured by what actually is done on the issues that affect people.

Woodward wrote that those who traveled with Trump regularly noticed that the couple shares a honest affection, though Melania operated independently from Trump.

Trump's economic adviser Gary Cohn removed papers from the president's desk to stop him from withdrawing from KORUS, according to Woodward's reporting.

Nothing of significance has emerged from the efforts to exploit Afghanistan's minerals, but Trump's Afghanistan-centric South Asia strategy, unveiled in August 2017, said the U.S. would stay with additional troops.

Jonathan Karp, president and publisher of Simon & Schuster, said sales were "with the force of a cultural phenomenon", as Woodward continues a round of media appearances this week.

As part Trump's efforts to discredit Woodward on Monday, he wrote another tweet in which he quoted Washington Examiner reporter Katelyn Caralle as saying, "You can not take this book too seriously". "Frankly, the White House and the staff here are focused on doing our jobs", she told CNN's Jeff Zeleny.

Woodward depicts widespread White House dysfunction in "Fear", raising explosive allegations of a paranoid president whose own staff believes is unhinged and erratic. "I don´t even know why any of us are here". Woodward goes on "The Daily Briefing" to talk about his new book 'Fear'.

The book is number 8 on Amazon's Top 20 most sold and most read books of the week and Fear is already the sixth biggest seller of 2018 on Amazon, CNN reported.
