Ayanna Pressley defeats Michael Capuano in MA U.S. House race

Massachusetts Rep. Michael Capuano became the second Democratic congressman to lose in a primary this year, falling to Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley in a race that attracted national attention as the latest referendum on the future of the Democratic Party.

Ayanna Pressley, 44, won the Democratic nomination for the US House of Representatives in Massachusetts's seventh district, one of the most left-leaning in America and which includes Harvard University.

Pressley's win echoes the June primary in a safely Democratic New York City congressional district where first-time candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat a 10-term incumbent, sparking enthusiasm for progressive candidates across the United States. She is not facing a Republican in November.

Pressley's win was the latest in a streak of victories by younger, more racially diverse Democratic candidates against established rivals ahead of the November 6 election when Democrats need to pick up 23 seats in the House of Representatives to serve as a more effective foil to Trump's agenda.

The piece goes on to quote her about how she plans to lay out a leftist agenda, and not just provide "resisting and affronting" to President Donald Trump.

Capuano also had the backing of the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, and Massachusetts's first African-American governor, Deval Patrick.

In a video clip of the moment, her family and staff can be heard shrieking and crying in the background as Pressley begins to hug those around her.

But she made her background a major part of the race, highlighting the importance of boosting diversity in the Democratic Party, talking about her own experience with sexual assault, and regularly calling for more "bold, activist leadership".

Later during Pressley's victory party, her stepdaughter Cora stood in silence with tears rolling down her face as she listened to Pressley speak.

"I knew we would be essentially, alone", Pressley said during her victory speech.

Pressley defeated Capuano by arguing that it was time for a change in representation in the district.

Monteiro says as a woman raised by a single mother coming from a "tough neighborhood", she can relate to Pressley "in so many ways".
